Attention Culpeper County Public Schools High School Families,
Culpeper County Public Schools (CCPS) is committed to maintaining safe, supportive learning environments for all students, staff, and visitors. As part of our ongoing, proactive approach to school safety, we would like to share information about an upcoming pilot of the CEIA OPENGATE® weapons detection systems at the Culpeper County High School (CCHS) and Eastern View HIgh School (EVHS) campuses.
Beginning this week, CCHS and EVHS will pilot weapons detection systems at select evening events, such as athletic contests or other large gatherings. These systems are similar to those used at many public venues and are designed to enhance security while allowing for an efficient and minimally disruptive entry process.CCPS will join more than 100 school divisions across the Commonwealth in implementing this technology.
In addition to evening events, after staff training is complete, CCPS will pilot the systems on a limited, random basis during morning arrival at high schools later in the semester. This pilot phase will allow the division to evaluate how the technology functions.
It is important to emphasize that this pilot is not a response to any specific incident. Rather, this initiative reflects a proactive effort to explore available technology and best practices to further strengthen school safety.
“Safety is always our top priority,” said Russell Houck, Executive Director of Student Services for Culpeper County Public Schools. “The weapons detection system is a proactive step to serve as a deterrent and prevention system.”
Throughout the pilot process, CCPS will continue to follow established safety protocols and work closely with school administrators and law enforcement.
We appreciate the continued partnership and support of our families as we thoughtfully review additional safety measures. More information, including next steps and updates, will be shared as the pilot progresses.
